Obtaining an International Qualification Assessment (IQA)7 Feb 2025

If you are planning a move to New Zealand and your overseas qualification(s) is not on Immigration New Zealand’s Updated List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment, you may need to have your qualifications assessed by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) by obtaining an International Qualification Assessment (IQA). This assessment may also be needed for some professional registration requirements.

What do you need to know about the IQA process?

Requirements for Evidence and Documentation

To successfully complete your IQA application, you need to provide specific evidence and documentation.
  • Certified Copies: All documents submitted must be certified copies. This means they need to be verified by a trusted authority, such as a lawyer or notary public, to confirm they are true copies of the original documents.
  • Translations: If your documents are not in English, you must provide certified translations. These translations must be undertaken by a professional translator or translation service.
  • Educational Documents: Include all relevant educational documents, such as degree certificates, diplomas, and academic transcripts. These documents should clearly show the courses you have completed and the grades achieved.
  • Verification: Some qualifications may require additional verification from the issuing institution. This could involve the institution sending confirmation directly to the NZQA.
  • Supporting Documents: Provide any additional documents that support your application, such as a curriculum vitae (CV), letters of recommendation, or proof of supportive work experience.
  • Application Form: Complete the online application form accurately and thoroughly. Ensure all sections are filled out and that you provide all requested information.
  • Fees: Be aware of the fees associated with the assessment process. Ensure you have paid the correct amount and include proof of payment with your application.

Verification Options

There are several acceptable forms of verification for your qualification documents:
  1. Online Platform: If your awarding institution or a government authority offers an online verification service without additional payment, you can use this option. Provide the verification link and instructions on how to verify both your award certificate and academic transcripts.
  2. Direct Verification from Your Awarding Institution: Electronic copies of your award certificate and complete transcripts can be accepted if sent directly by the relevant staff (e.g., University Registrar, Student Academic Administrator) from the awarding institution. Ensure the documents are emailed directly to [email protected] with your name and IQA application number in the subject line. Note that physical documents are not accepted, and the sender must use the official email address of the awarding institution.
  3. World Education Services (WES): NZQA has partnered with WES to provide a qualification verification service. You can apply for a Global Records Verification Report for NZQA through the WES website. If you have multiple qualifications, they can all be verified in the same WES application. Note; WES US/Canada credential evaluation reports do not meet NZQA’s verification requirements. If you already have a WES US/Canada report, you can apply for a WES Global Records Verification Report for NZQA using a different email address and contact WES with your previous reference number to expedite the process.

Important Notes

  • Deadline: You must provide the required documents or information requested by the NZQA by the specified deadline. If you face difficulties or delays, email NZQA before the deadline to request an extension.
  • Application Hold: Your application will be held until the deadline. If you do not contact NZQA by the deadline, your application will be cancelled, and no refund will be made.
  • Costs: Applicants are responsible for any costs associated with obtaining third-party verification or additional information.
  • Submission: All verified documents must be sent directly from the third party to NZQA at [email protected], unless NZQA is given direct access to the verified information via a web portal or online verification platform.
  • Application Resumption: Once NZQA receives the required documents, they will re-check your application and if all requirements are met, your application will continue to be processed.
